1% for the Planet Partners: Outdoor Outreach & The Conservation Alliance

As a 1% for the Planet company, we reflect on the responsibility we take as a business to do what we can to care for this earth—not just on Earth day, but every day.

Not only do we reduce as much waste as possible, but we offset what we can’t (and then some). As a certified Climate Neutral company, we are proud to have offset 541 tonnes of carbon last year, and 1,117 tonnes in total thus far.

As part of 1% for the Planet, a sustainably minded network of companies, we donate 1% of all sales to environmental organizations. For this second quarter of the year, we turn our attention to the work of two of our non-profit partners: Outdoor Outreach and The Conservation Alliance.

Outdoor Outreach is an inspiration for underserved youth in San Diego who may not have the opportunities to experience natural parks and open-space areas. By introducing participants to the outdoors through fun and exciting activities, Outdoor Outreach lets them see possibility and opportunity in their lives, and realize positive attitude and behavioral changes that will help them become successful adults.

Since 1999, Outdoor Outreach has provided opportunities for more than 16,000 young people to explore their world, challenge themselves, and discover what they’re capable of.

96% of participants:

• Increased their ability to set and achieve goals
• Increased their ability to work with others

Outdoor Outreach provides opportunities for youth to participate in hands-on environmental education and stewardship as well, providing them the opportunity to find, appreciate and care for nature, and to make a difference in their communities and beyond.

the conservation alliance

Protected wild places fuel our adventures, enhance wildlife habitat, mitigate the effects of climate change, and are the bedrock of outdoor-inspired businesses. Our shared federal lands comprise one fourth of the United States, but not all of this land is protected.

The Conservation Alliance is a group of like-minded businesses that collectively fund and partner with organizations to protect North America’s wild places for their habitat and for future generations to enjoy.

Since 1989, the Conservation Alliance has contributed more than $24 million to grassroots conservation groups throughout North America.

So far, this funding has helped to:

• Save more than 73 million acres of wildlands
• Protect 3,576 miles of rivers
• Stop or remove 36 dams
• Designate five marine reserves
• Purchase 18 climbing areas

The Winter 2021 grant cycle just wrapped up and 21 groups received funding with a total of $938,000 awarded to projects located in 13 states and provinces. 

In this grant cycle, four groups received Conservation Alliance funding for the first time: Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition for their effort to complete the Tribally Led Land Management Plan for 1.9 million acres located in Southeastern Utah; Open Space Institute for their effort to address systemic lack of public access by acquiring 930 acres and designating the Black River State Park and Water Trail in South Carolina; Continental Divide Trail Coalition for their work to close the final funding gap that secures permanent public access to the entire Continental Divide Trail through state lands in New Mexico; and The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County to acquire and protect the 1,715-acre Santa Rita Ranch in California.
