When we’re not working, many of us at Pure are trekking up mountains, chasing surf, and cracking our favorite cans under the stars. We are united not only by our love of beer, but of wild places, and we share a sense of responsibility to care for the environment around us.
And we know we’re not alone. As a member of the 1% for the Planet network, we are one of 1,400 businesses around the world run by like-minded individuals, eager to donate 1% of our sales to environmental organizations working to protect our planet. Thus far, 1% for the Planet members have collectively given back more than $270 million to the environment!
To continue in the spirit of giving, this year we will shine a spotlight on two of our 1% for the Planet non-profit partners each quarter. We hope that you will be inspired by their stories and feel even better about the beer you purchase from us, knowing that it helps to create real impact.
Without further ado, allow us to introduce you to Balboa Park Conservancy and Protect Our Winters. And stay tuned for events throughout this quarter that will help support them!
BALBOA PARK CONSERVANCY
With over 1,200 acres, 17 museums, historic landmarks, award-winning gardens, nature trails, and green space, Balboa Park is a true gem nestled into the urban landscape of San Diego.
The Balboa Park Conservancy is dedicated to protecting and promoting the Park for all visitors and future generations.
Since its formation in 2011, the Conservancy has worked with the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department and other partners to:
- Plant trees on the West Mesa
- Reactivate and turn the Plaza de Panama into one of San Diego’s primary public gathering spots
- Host the annual December Nights holiday festival (among other projects)
Additionally, the Conservancy is currently developing plans and raising funds to completely restore the 100-year-old Botanical Building.
It is hard to find a superior public landscape that is not the result of a public-private partnership. This is where the Balboa Park Conservancy comes in… Due to the city’s limited resources, the Conservancy takes on the responsibility and challenge of raising funds to adequately maintain and care for the park. Unfortunately with a growing backlog of deferred maintenance projects, they need our help to preserve this cultural icon and what many call the “Jewel of San Diego.”

PROTECT OUR WINTERS
Extreme weather, fossil fuel development, and wildfires–just to name a few things–are hurting the outdoor playgrounds we all love. Founded in 2007 by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones, Protect Our Winters is a community of athletes, scientists, creatives and business leaders advancing non-partisan policies to protect these places from climate change.
Their goal: carbon neutrality by 2050. To achieve this, they aim to build the national political will to enable meaningful climate policies, and shift cultural norms to make these policies durable.
With that end goal in mind, their policy agenda consists of a four-pronged approach to climate solutions, including:
- CARBON PRICING: Carbon pricing incentivizes practices that reduce emissions, making fossil fuels more expensive and creating opportunities to use more clean energy sources.
- RENEWABLE ENERGY: A renewable energy economy will significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and curb greenhouse gas emissions.
- ELECTRIFYING TRANSIT: Transportation produced the most greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. in 2017. Strong advocacy to transform transportation can reduce those emissions.
- PUBLIC LANDS: Fossil fuel extraction on our public lands is a massive contributor to our country’s greenhouse gas emissions. POW is working to keep fossil fuel extraction out of the places we love.
You can help.
